There were many causes for the Civil War. Some of the events leading up to the the civil war were slavery, the Compromise of 1850, and the Kansas-Nebraska act. Slavery was a controversy between the south and north. The north was anti-slavery and the south was pro-slavery. They fought and argued over whether or not to continue or expand slavery. The issue of slavery caused many fights, battles, and eventually the Civil War. The Compromise of 1850 was another reason that led to the civil war. The compromise made California a free state and made the other territories taken from mexico open to slavery. It outlawed the slave trade in Washington D.C and strengthened the fugitive slave law. This caused a lot of tension between the north and the south. The south was upset because a free state was added to the country and the north was unhappy because slavery was able to spread to the rest of the country. This compromise created lots of tension between the two parts of the country. The Kansas-Nebraska act proposed the idea of “popular sovereignty” for the new states being added to the U.S. Overall, these reasons combined to create a hate for both sides that was directed toward each other.
