Edwin Stanton
This is Edward Stanton in the picture to the left. He played a huge role in abolishing slavery. He was appointed as Simon Cameron's legal advisor and less than one year later Cameron resigned. Then Edward Stanton took over as secretary of war for The United States of America. Stanton was not very good at holding his ground in office. Edwin Stanton also used the telegraph to oversee every move and every thing the army did or said. In 1862 he made the mistake of closing all military recruiting outposts, but to make up for that, in 1863 he took only 10 days to get 20,000 troops over 1,500 miles to reinforce the union general William Rosecrans. Another good thing he did was he cancelled all foreign trade, which made the U.S figure out their factories and really helped the U.S. He helped the railroad system which boosted transport of military supplies and transport of goods all across the U.S. Edwin clashed greatly about the Confederate states with Jackson. Edwin also openly criticized Jackson for not abolishing slavery. Jackson was furious. After all of the Civil War he went crazy.
