Battle of Gettysburg: When Robert Lee, the commander of the Confederate Army, learned that Union forces were moving toward Gettysburg, he gathered his army in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Lee sent a part of his forces to approach the town but Union cavalry had already arrived two days previously. As both armies moved towards Gettysburg, the Confederate forces drove the outnumbered cavalry back to Cemetery Hill, across town. Lee, wanting to pursue the Union troops, ordered James Ewell Brown to pursue the troops. Ewell declined these orders because he believed that the Union troops had a strong position on the hill. The next day, July 3nd, the full Union Army arrived and had assembled on Cemetery Ridge and Culp’s Hill. Lee ordered his troops to attack as early as possible, but Ewell did not get his troops into position until 4pm. Once they got into position, they opened fire on the Union Corps commanded by Daniel Sickles. During the next few hours vicious fighting commenced along Sickles’ first line of men. The Union’s troops were pushed back except for one regiment from Minnesota. They were able to keep their position on the hill named Little Round Top. The Confederate troops were defeated after they tried to assault the Union.
