Robert E. Lee: Robert E. Lee was a general for the Confederate side during the Civil War. He was also a military officer for the U.S Army. He served as a general under Winfield Scott in the Mexican war. He made himself well known in the battles of Veracruz, Churubusco, and Chapultepec. During Robert's time in the army his son was assigned to the Corps of Engineers. Although Robert's son was injured badly, he was made a very high rank in the army under Winfield Scott. In 1861 Lee took control over the Army of Northern Virginia, which he lead for the remainder of the battle. Under Robert E. Lee, the Army of Northern Virginian had great success at Peninsula Campaign, Second Bull Run, and Fredericksburg. His greatest victory was the Battle of Chancellorsville. Even though it was a sure loss for the Confederates he kept fighting the Union general, Ulysses S. Grant, in a series of battles from 1864-65. Finally, Lee surrendered what was left of his army in April of 1865. Ever since that battle, Lee has been praised for his battle tactics and wonderful battle mind. He is considered a southern hero.
